🐾 Truman’s Birthday Wish Came True

Truman has always been a gentle, lovable cat. His mom first met him while working at the Humane Society of the North Bay, where he had arrived as one of four kittens left in a cardboard box outside the shelter. She originally planned to foster him, but Truman quickly won her over. Soon, he had a permanent home with his family and two rabbit siblings.

Earlier this year, Truman’s family noticed he wasn’t acting like himself. He wasn’t jumping as much, seemed stiff, and had stopped enjoying some of his favorite routines. When his mom brought him to Carrington College, where she is studying to become a registered veterinary technician, Dr. Weaver recommended X-rays. The results revealed fractures in both of Truman’s hips, and he needed surgery on both sides.

The diagnosis was overwhelming. As a student working part-time, Truman’s mom worried about how she could afford the surgery he needed. She reached out to multiple clinics for estimates, and through a recommendation, learned about Maverick Veterinary Surgery Service and Sage Compassion for Animals.

The timing made the experience especially meaningful. The same week Truman’s family learned he needed surgery, his mom celebrated her birthday. As she blew out her candles, she made one wish: that Truman could get the surgery he needed.

Thanks to Sage Compassion for Animal’s support, that wish came true. Truman received surgery at Maverick, with his family finally able to focus on helping him heal instead of worrying about how to pay for his care. Reflecting on the relief of finding help, his mom shared:

“I felt like I could breathe knowing there was help out there, and me and my boyfriend could focus on helping Truman heal.”

Recovery took patience. At first, Truman struggled with the litter box and had trouble keeping himself upright. His family made sure he was comfortable with treats, a heating pad, lots of affection, and careful attention to his veterinarian’s instructions. He was also determined to escape his recovery cone, and even managed to get out of three different cones and a recovery suit!

But little by little, Truman began feeling like himself again. By the 11th day after surgery, he was moving with more confidence, seeking out attention, purring louder, and showing interest in playing. He even tried jumping onto the bed to be close to his family.

His mom was overwhelmed with joy at seeing such a difference. As she watched Truman become more comfortable and confident, she shared:

“He is much more confident, comfortable and happier thanks to you!”

Truman’s mom is deeply grateful to Sage Compassion for Animals, the team at Maverick Veterinary Surgery Service, Dr. Weaver and her classmates who helped identify his injury, and Kris at the Humane Society of the North Bay, who first gave Truman the chance to find a loving home.

Today, Truman is healing well and preparing to have his stitches removed. He is surrounded by the family who loves him, and the birthday wish that once felt out of reach has become a reality.
