When Christopher Rodriguez welcomed Lola into his life, he wasn’t looking for anything extraordinary, just a little companion to share his days. Lola was three months old when a friend gave her to him, knowing she was too playful to be left without enough attention. From the start, Lola fit perfectly. Tiny but full of personality, the five-pound dachshund quickly became Christopher’s constant. Sweet, playful, and a little protective of her food and treats, Lola brought joy and routine into his life, especially during a time of big change. In 2025, Christopher made the decision to return to college full time, working part time and committing himself to finishing school no matter what. Lola was there for all of it.

Then one morning, Christopher noticed something was wrong. Lola woke up with one eye completely shut. Alarmed, he rushed her to the first veterinary clinic with an available appointment. The diagnosis was an eye ulcer, and treatment began immediately. But the relief didn’t last. Over the next two months, the ulcer kept returning. Christopher took Lola to the vet again and again, seven visits in total searching for answers. Each time, the worry grew. He loved Lola deeply, but the cost of continued care was becoming overwhelming.

Eventually, Lola was referred to a veterinary ophthalmologist at Monterey Bay Eye Specialist Veterinary. There, Christopher finally learned the cause of her pain: a tiny hair growing inside Lola’s eye, repeatedly irritating it and causing the ulcer to return. Surgery was the only solution. To protect her eye until then, a contact lens was placed, but the surgery itself came with a cost Christopher didn’t know how he could manage.

That day, as he drove home, the weight of it all hit him. Lola was only one year old. Christopher was doing everything he could to build a better future, and now he was facing the possibility of not being able to help the dog who depended on him completely. He prayed for help. He cried. And he promised Lola, “We’re going to get the help we need, my love.” That search led him to Sage Compassion for Animals.

With the support of Sage Compassion for Animals and the generosity of compassionate donors, Christopher was able to cover most of Lola’s surgery costs. What once felt impossible suddenly felt manageable. For the first time in weeks, he didn’t feel alone. Today, Lola is doing well, with her beautiful eyes protected and her future bright again. She’s back by Christopher’s side, where she’s always happiest. Christopher hopes one day he’ll be able to give back the same way others gave to him. Because of compassion, Lola didn’t lose her sight  or her place beside the person who loves her most. Stories like Lola’s are possible because supporters believe that money should never decide whether a pet gets the care they need or gets to stay with the person who loves them.
